Sitting in the Dark

May 4, 2011

Sitting in the Dark

Sitting in the dark
with a child lying in her lap,
she gazes out at the park —
staring from her trap.

The freedom she once knew
and the stars that once shined
now she must reject and eschew,
she must be blind.

Forced to follow an ignorant fool
and live out her days in stupid bliss,
she is no better than a mule
deprived of care and kiss.

Yet no one helps this poor mother
who stares out with dim, lifeless eyes.
Her kind cannot help one another —
required to heed that which they despise.
